Trump says China and Taiwan should 'both cool it'

During a two-day summit in Beijing, President Trump refused to directly answer Chinese President Xi Jinping's question about whether the United States would defend Taiwan in case of a Chinese attack, stating "I don't talk about that" and claiming only he knows the answer. Xi warned Trump at the start of the summit that mishandling the Taiwan independence issue could create "clashes and conflicts" between the two nations and jeopardize their entire relationship, calling Taiwan "the most important issue in China-U.S. relations."
