Electric motorbike teen detained for killing a grandmother on zebra crossing

Billy Stokoe, 18, was sentenced to almost seven years in youth detention after admitting to causing the death of 86-year-old Gloria Stephenson by dangerous driving in Sunderland in May 2025. Stokoe was riding an illegal electric motorbike while under the influence of cannabis and using his mobile phone when he struck Stephenson on a zebra crossing; dashcam footage showed he looked at his victim lying in the road before riding away. Stephenson's daughter told the court she would "hate you until my last breath," while the family remembered her as a vivacious grandmother of 13 with a zest for life.
