Israel destroys bridge in Lebanon and threatens Gaza-scale devastation

World · Micro · 23 hours ago

Israel destroyed the Zrarieh Bridge over the Litani River in southern Lebanon on Friday, marking the first time it has openly acknowledged targeting civilian infrastructure in its campaign against Hezbollah. The military claimed without evidence that Hezbollah fighters were using the bridge to move between Lebanon’s north and south. Simultaneously, Israel dropped leaflets over Beirut warning that Lebanon could face the same “scale of destruction visited upon Gaza,” where over 40,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023.

The escalation comes as Israeli attacks since early March have killed 773 people in Lebanon, with the military expanding its assault into more Beirut neighborhoods and deploying additional troops. The threat of “Gaza-scale devastation” carries particular weight given the wholesale destruction of Gaza’s infrastructure, hospitals, schools, and residential areas over the past year and a half. The targeting of civilian infrastructure like bridges represents a significant escalation that could cripple Lebanon’s economy and movement of goods and people, following the playbook used in Gaza where Israel systematically destroyed water treatment plants, hospitals, universities, and other essential infrastructure.
