What is Israel’s endgame in Lebanon?

World · Micro · 23 hours ago

Israel has expanded its military operations and territorial control in southern Lebanon following a November 2024 ceasefire with Hezbollah that failed to end cross-border violence. Nearly one million Lebanese have been displaced from their homes, with Lebanon’s health ministry reporting over 2,000 killed, including 127 children. Israeli ground forces have occupied parts of southern Lebanon while conducting intensified airstrikes on Beirut’s densely populated suburbs.

The conflict stems from escalating tensions since October 2023, when Hezbollah began targeting Israeli cities in solidarity with Gaza. Israel frames its actions as necessary to counter what it describes as an Iranian proxy that has built extensive tunnel networks and amassed significant weapons stockpiles in southern Lebanon. However, Israel’s continued territorial control beyond the ceasefire raises questions about longer-term occupation plans, echoing its 1982-2000 occupation of southern Lebanon that ended only after sustained resistance campaigns.
