Brazil pulls visa of Trump adviser who asked to visit Bolsonaro in prison

World · Micro · 23 hours ago

Brazil revoked the visa of Darren Beattie, a former Trump administration official who requested to visit imprisoned ex-President Jair Bolsonaro. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes first denied Beattie’s prison visit request, then President Lula da Silva ordered the visa cancellation. Lula stated this was retaliation for the US revoking Brazilian Health Minister Alexandre Padilha’s visa, while Brazilian officials claimed Beattie misrepresented his visit’s purpose.

Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in prison for his role in a coup plot following Brazil’s 2022 election loss to Lula. The far-right former president, often called “Brazil’s Trump,” attempted to overturn election results and faced charges for undermining democratic institutions. This diplomatic spat reflects broader tensions between the two nations despite recent attempts at normalization between the Trump and Lula administrations.
