Drone attack on market in Sudan kills 11, as air war civilian toll mounts
A drone strike hit a market in western Sudan, killing 11 people and wounding dozens including children, part of an intensifying aerial campaign between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The UN reports over 200 civilians have died in drone attacks since March 4, with strikes targeting markets, schools, and hospitals. In West Kordofan alone, SAF drone strikes killed at least 152 civilians, including 50 when a market and hospital were hit in Al-Muglad on March 4.
The conflict began in April 2023 when fighting erupted between Sudan’s military leadership and the RSF, led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. Both forces are increasingly deploying powerful drones despite international warnings about strikes on populated areas. The war has displaced millions of Sudanese civilians and created one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, yet receives minimal international attention compared to other conflicts. The systematic targeting of civilian infrastructure like markets and hospitals represents a clear escalation in tactics that disproportionately harm Sudan’s most vulnerable populations.
